History was made on Monday as Nigeria’s Super Eagles took the pitch against Guinea-Bissau for their 100th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) match. Though the pressure was high, the Eagles surely rose to the occasion securing a 1-0 narrow pass victory into the round of 16.
Nigeria's 100th AFCON appearance wasn't just about the team on the pitch. It was a celebration of the millions of Nigerians who have cheered them on over the years. From the days of Kanu Nwankwo and Jay-Jay Okocha to the current generation of stars, the AFCON has been a stage where Nigerian hopes and dreams take flight.
The journey of the Super Eagles that led to the glorious milestone of the team we see today started with a lot of turbulence and celebrations as the seed sown in 1963 by the team ignited the start of an incredible road of experiences.
Recall that in 1980, the Eagles lifted their first AFCON trophy on home soil with a mixture of emotions, a golden moment that is engraved in national memory. They won in 1994 where Jay-Jay artistry painted the continent in green and white in Tunisia.
Not all sunshine and rainbow from 2004 to 2010 where there were defeats, missed opportunities, moments of desperation, heartbreaks, and near-misses that left fans hoping for a breakthrough.
Their prayers were answered in 2013 where the phoenix Eagles gave an indomitable spirit that sealed another triumph proving that the team still has what it takes to win an AFCON cup in South Africa.
And in Monday’s game, those dreams soared a little higher where every move, tackle and goal paved an historic moment in the minds of everyone watching Live and in the stadium. The Super Eagles have booked their place in the knockout stages, but more importantly, they have earned their names in the annals of AFCON history. And as the celebrations subside, one thing is clear: Nigeria's journey in the tournament is far from over.
