Educational Growth in the Pan-Atlantic University

The Editorial Board

28 Jan 2024

On the 16th of November,2023 the School of Media and Communication announced that the NUC had official approved courses including BSc Film and Multimedia Studies .in the university’s curriculum.

As an ever-evolving institution, the Pan-Atlantic University remains a game changer as they include some of the new departments to their curriculum proposed by the National Universities Commission (NUC). The University has set itself apart as a leading institution revolutionizing the undergraduate scene in Nigeria by putting systems in place that can accommodate the introduction of these unique courses.

In the 2023/2024 academic calendar, the university included three new departments to their list of faculties increasing the variety of fields for new applicants to pick from. Before this moment the university had included the Department of Finance to the School of Management and Social Sciences making it four in total to the existing Accounting, Business Administration, and Economics departments.

In the School of Media and Communication (SMC), the school included  Film and Media Studies to the two thriving departments Mass Communication and Information Science and Media Studies (ISMS) making it three.

Also, in the School of Science and Technology (SST), two new department were included Software Engineering and Mechatronics to the already existing Computer Science, Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Mechanical Engineering making it five.

Conversation with some current students revealed their desire for the new departments to already be in existence before they joined the school but as amazing as the new changes where, no preparation was made for new students’ intake into those departments.

Most new students found out upon entry into other departments about the new department and switched over to them. Going through the school’s website those courses are still not added to the list for the future applicant to be aware of the available options.

It seemed like a rushed decision by the University though its good, but it needed better planning and execution including updating to be better accepted and perceived by the current students, new intakes and possibly the staff.

Regardless of this minor factor, it is a positive feat for the school as no other university in the country has included these departments into their calendar according to my last updated search.

However, recently PAU celebrated its 10th Matriculation of over 500 students and looking over at its first matriculation having close to 70 students and just three departments. The growth and development of the school is immensely improved and PAU is still ensuring quality and industry standard education as they take on more students and courses.
